Elgan: NY Burger Joint Goes Social, Mobile
Welcome to Food 2.0. A new NYC eatery, 4food, is using social media to attract customers using giveaways on Facebook (tag the 4food wall to win an iPad) and Twitter (post a picture of yourself in front of 4food’s Madison Ave. “tag wall”). Once opened, patrons will be able create items online or via an in-store iPad – every time someone orders a custom menu item, the creator of that item will receive a food credit of 25 cents, thus driving traffic back to the store. The restaurant will also feature a 240-square-foot screen streaming Foursquare and Twitter updates, which customers will be able to reply to/comment on using free Wi-Fi.

Cellphone in New Role: Loyalty Card
Patrons are going paperless, using mobile devices to track their purchases. To meet this trend, Loopt – a location-based network similar to Foursquare – has launched Loopt Star, a mobile game which rewards users for checking in to specific locations. Instead of selling banner ad space, Loopt is asking advertisers to offer special incentives for its 3.4 million registered users (Foursquare has 1.4 million) – retailers who have created reward promotions specifically for Loopt Star users include Gap, Burger King and Universal Music.
