Coyne Public Relations is pleased to announce that the agency has recently won two awards in partnership with Pacira Pharmaceuticals, Inc. for their work on a national education program related to non-opioid options for postsurgical pain management. At the PRSA-NY Big Apple Awards, the company’s Choices Matter campaign won in the Public Service: Business category, while at the PRSA-NJ Pyramid Awards the program won the Media Relations category.

Pacira partnered with Coyne PR to change the conversation around postsurgical opioid use, as research shows surgery has become an unintentional gateway to this deadly epidemic. Together they developed Choices Matter, a national, integrated campaign designed to educate, empower and activate patients, caregivers and physicians to proactively discuss postsurgical pain management, including non-opioid options, before surgery. The team developed a variety of resources to help patients and surgeons, such as PlanAgainstPain.com which provides a customizable discussion guide to ensure patients ask their surgeons the right questions prior to surgery.

The campaign rolled out with a branded, year-round media program and included the summer 2016 launch of the unbranded Choices Matter initiative. Efforts drove significant national, local and trade media coverage and advocacy organization engagement. Most importantly, the campaign empowered patients to discuss opioid alternatives to managing pain after surgery with their healthcare provider.

“The current opioid crisis is well documented, as it’s taken a significant toll on individuals, families and communities throughout the country,” said Kelly Dencker, Executive Vice President and head of the Coyne PR Healthcare practice. “Unfortunately, while surgery can be a gateway to opioid dependency, most people are unaware they have choices. We are extremely proud to partner with Pacira to educate consumers, caregivers and the surgical community that non-opioid options are available for postsurgical pain.”
